Emancipation Proclamation and Gettysburg

The Emancipation Proclamation is known best for freeing slaves in states that have seceded. It also allows slaves to join the Union Army. The most well-known group of slaves in the army is the Massachusetts 54th Infantry. It is made up entirely of able-bodied slaves. Some generals have even said that they fight harder than any other group. This act was delayed to pacify the border states.  If Lincoln would have freed the slaves any earlier, some border states might have joined the confederacy. The battle of Antietam allowed the world to believe the Union would prevail.  The act also did not free the slaves in the border states.  That year was also the year that the Gettysburg Address was given. The Gettysburg Address was given in memory of those who had fallen while serving at the battle of Gettysburg. This address also announced the dedication of the Arlington National Cemetery.
