Andersonville

Andersonville was one of the largest military camps in the Confederacy. Even though Andersonville was only operating for fourteen months, it still had over 13,000 Union deaths. The bodies of the dead were buried in a cemetery just outside the walls. This was such a large facility that it held over 45,000 Union soldiers. These prisoners did not have access to basic necessities such as food, water, shelter, and clothing. They were also tortured and diseases were spread. Today, Andersonville stands as a National Historic Site.
